JOURNEY OF WOMEN: BEYOND EQUALITY AND EMPOWERMENT
A National Seminar on 23rd March, 2011

organized by Women’s Studies Centre, Bethune College (UGC approved), Kolkata

Conference Note:

In its struggle for economic and political freedom, society has always tried to move towards the ideal of equality for all. The wage for equality and liberty has been the motive of many mass movements. However, comprehensive equality among men and women in all spheres of life is to be realized only by the march of human societies along the long and diverse paths of ‘progress’. The power relations that impede women’s attainment of healthy and fulfilling lives operate at many levels of the society, from the most personal to the decidedly public. Equality and empowerment of women is recognized globally as key element to achieve progress in all areas. In India, in Spite of there being a Constitutional provision for Equal Rights for both men and women, in practice, discrimination still reigns. Also palpable are the women who are financially independent but often do not get the opportunity to take and implement vital decisions at the familial sphere as well as in the workplace. The final verdict often lies in the hands of patriarchal authorities because the ‘moral’ framework of the society is still guided by the male perception. Thus, in spite of economic and political freedom, the concept of women’s ‘advancement’ is to be envisaged beyond the conventional framework of ‘empowerment’. Though the issues of economic and political liberation of women are still relevant in a developing society like ours, the horizon of empowerment has to be extended beyond the politico-economic agenda. Emergence of a ‘woman’ beyond her stereotypical image and attainment of ‘equality’ in the true sense of the term in all spheres of life are the aspects that are to be addressed in order to ensure a healthy and fulfilling ‘quality of life’.
