Two-day Online Certified Workshop for "Mastering Virtual Classroom Teaching"

The UG & PG Department of Mathematics, Bethune College and IQAC, Bethune College organized a Two-day Online Certified Workshop for "Mastering Virtual Classroom Teaching" on the 16th and 18th June, 2020 during the lockdown on the wake of the global pandemic Covid 19. This workshop was organized in collaboration with Classle SKILLNET, a skill development ecosystem working with the National Skill Development Corporation, India.

The Principal, Professor Krishna Roy inaugurated the program and motivated the participants for further engaging their students through online academic interactions until physical teaching resumes. She also mentioned that the young minds that constitute more than half of the population of our country need to be kept motivated towards more wholesome learning. They must be engaged into knowing the scientific aspects of the pandemic and its precautions than worrying or panicking from the myths generated.

The workshop was conducted by Sri Natarajan P. of Classle SKILLNET. He discussed and demonstrated many tools and techniques for online presentation of teaching materials. He demonstrated the techniques of forming quizzes and tests for the students and explained how the educators can engage them and keep them attentive in this new method of learning that is being used in these times. Apart from the voice over sessions by the teachers the students may be shown any of the online resources available during the online classes which was the added benefit of the online classes. However, all the participants and the presenters agreed that there can be no substitute of physical classrooms.

On behalf of the Department Dr. Rupa Pal acted as the convener, co-hosted and moderated the workshop through the two scheduled days. The participants sincerely attended the program and actively participated in the interactive sessions at the end of the program each day. The vote of thanks message of the Head of the Department, Professor Pratap Chandra Ray was read at the end of the program due to some technical problems that restrained him to attend the program on the last day.

226 teachers from different schools, colleges and universities participated in the program. 5 of them were professors in different Universities, 22 teachers from schools and the rest were from colleges within and outside the state, including participants from Bethune College. All the participants received certificates after successful completion of the program.

Based on feedback collected after the program it was found that 98% educators had learnt many techniques of online teaching from the program and that they wanted to apply the techniques to their classes further for engaging their students. More than 99% educators appreciated the initiative taken by the Department.

The feedback and the responses from the participants keeps the organisers motivated.
