Completed a UGC sponsored Minor Research Project on ‘Dress and Social Morality: Attire and Etiquette of Women of the Tagore Family in Colonial Bengal’.

Ms. Jayati Ghatak

Dr. Shyamali Sur chaired the session on Modern India History (sub section on Environment, Science and Social History) at the annual Conference of Paschim Banga Itihas Sansad held in January, 2009. 

Dr. Urmita Ray acted as a Resource person and spoke on ‘Dress and Social Morality: The Case of the Tagore Family in Colonial Bengal’ during a UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Life and Culture in Bengal in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries’ organized by the Department of History, Burdwan University.

 
       
       
   

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES OF STUDENTS

 
   
  • Inter – government college State level awards in relay race and broad jump (2006).
  • Elocution – First position in an Annual all-India competition secured by Pronami Basak, (2005).
  • Participation in NSS activities including Blood Donation Camp, Campaigns against Environmental Pollution, and for Aids Awareness. Departmental students also showed their concern for the problems faced by the marginalized/deprived sections in society through their active involvement in campaigns like ‘Adopt a Slum’ and ‘Adopt a Granny’.
 
       
    EXTENSION ACTIVITIES  
     
 
  • Participation in the Street drama organized to raise awareness of the environment.
     
  • The History as well as the Political Science and Philosophy departments led the institutional initiative to inculcate a basic sense of ethics and value education.
     
  • Collaborating with NGO groups like ‘EBONG ALAP’ in conducting awareness programmes on issues like gender, communalism , globalisation and so on.
     
  • Participation in colloquium in conjunction with the Kolkata Police.

    THE DEPARTMENT : A FEW DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  
       
   
  • THE COLLEGE ARCHIVES: Set up in 2006,
    it is a rich repository of old documents and records including invaluable photographs pertaining to the early history of the first women’s college in the country. They are presently undergoing a process of technical preservation with grants from both State and Central governments. The Archives has proved to be of immense value in unearthing crucial aspects of Women’s history in colonial Bengal.
  • The Department has, over the years, undertaken several initiatives in preserving and strengthening a sense of history amongst the community.
  • Prior to the founding of the Archives, the Department had, in collaboration with the West Bengal State Archives, organised an exhibition of old documents of the College in 2004.
  • The Department organized an Exhibition of Indian and Foreign coins in the College premises in 2004.
  • The Department, in collaboration with Victoria Memorial and KMDA, organized an exhibition - Calcutta – Past and Present.
 
       
    ENDOWMENT LECTURES  
       
   

Kalpana Dutta (Joshi) Memorial Lecture organised every year from 2003 onwards in collaboration with Biplabtirtha Chattogram Smriti Sanstha.
