 Thrust Areas:   Biodiversity, Environmental Pollution, Ecology, Instrumentation.  
       
 Completed Research project:   Biodiversity protection & Environmental pollution – funded by UGC During 2001-03 and 2004-06 respectively.
     
 Ongoing Research Projects:  
  1. Analysis of important bioactive compounds and genomic DNA polymorphism in Swertia - funded by CSIR from 2009.
     
  2. Conservation & documentation of wild biodiversity in Bethune College campus & surroundings – funded by WBBB from 2009.
     
  3. Identification and documentation of microbes from sewage effluents of different localities in Kolkata funded by UGC.
     
  4. To study the effects of exogenously applied plant growth regulators (PGRs) in Regulating the development of secondary phloem fiber in a low lignin mutant (dlpf, INGR No. 04107) of Jute funded by UGC from 2011.
     
  5. DNA fingerprinting of Musa accessions available in West Bengal - UGC sponsored Major Research Project 12.03.2009 - 3 years.
     
  6. Species-specific marker development in Gloriosa using molecular cytogenetic strategies - DST sponsored SERC Fast Track Project 12.05.2010 - 3 years.

  • Educational tours: As a compulsory part of the curriculum, we take our UG and PG students to different Phytogeographical Regions where they study the flora, nature of ecosystems, biodiversity etc. In this academic session, we took our UG IInd and
    PG IInd year students to Bhutan.
     
  • Local Visits: 14.03.11- Field Excursion to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Shibpur with PG II.
    Visit to Botanical Garden, Sibpur, Howrah & Bamungachi, North 24 Parganas to study the vegetation, medicinal plants and Herbarium of the endangered plants.
     
  • Publication: Publishing wall magazines “Prayas” every six months by the departmental students.
     
  • Participation: Active participation in different Science Fairs.

Achievements of the Students of the Department of Botany in Co-curricular and Extra-curricular During 2010
 
  1. A model on “Production of Electricity from Anthocyanin Pigment of Flower Petals” by Anindita Chatterjee, Monalisa Singh Roy and Pamela Ray of 1H & 2H was presented at the Eastern Zonal Science & Engineering Fair held at B.I.T.M. Kolkata and won the First Prize at INFOCOM Fair in January, 2010.
  2. Posters and Model on “Gene Therapy” by 1H was presented in Acharya Satyendranath Basu Smarak Vigyan Mela from 13.01.10 to 17.01.10.
  3. Sayantani Biswas, Joyeeta Das & Priyanka Saha of PG II presented a poster at the 97th Science Congress from 03.01.10 to 07.01.10 held at Tiruvanantapuram.
  4. Chitrita Chatterjee & Pritha Bhattacharya PG II presented a paper in a seminar held at Rastraguru Surendranath College on 13.02.10.
  5. IH participated in Annual Prize Stage Decoration on 21st February 2010.
  6. Priya Goswami IH won special Prize for securing highest marks in B.Sc. Part I (Botany) honours in February 2010.
  7. Sucharita Das PGI attended the workshop on Crop Biotechnology during 19-26 February, 2010.
  8. Somanjana Khatua of PG (2008) qualified GATE2010 in March 2010.
  9. Ananya Mukherjee IIH published two stories of 1500 words in the short story section of the 8th Day of Statesmam: (1) Hard Luck Do-gooder published on 21 March 2010; (2) the Clever Old lady published on 13 June 2010.
  10. IH participated in the seminar on Value and Ethics, Bethune Day Celebration in August 2010, Aalap 2010 and annual sports in December 2010.
  11. IIIH participated in Bethune Day Celebration in August 2010.
  12. Moumita Dev and Koushiki Das of 1st year, Attreyee Sengupta of PGI and Aparna Bhattacharya of PGII took part in the Debate, Quiz, Music and poster Painting competition organized by the University of Calcutta Celebration of XIX Common Wealth Games 2010 (National Service Scheme) during September 2010:-
    Koushiki Das stood 2nd in Music competition.
    Attreyee won 3rd Prize in Poster Painting competition.
    Aparna Bhattacharya got 1st Prize in Poster Painting competition.
     
  13. Koushiki Das also became 2nd in Sananda Fresh Face 2010.
  14. Sabarni Biswas of IH got highest marks- 73%, amongst the students of Botany IH in B.Sc. Part I (Botany) Honours.
  15. Chandrima Chakraborty, 2nd year stood 2nd in Rangoli in the inter college competition, Aalap 2010.
  16. Anwesha Roy became 2nd in Mehendi competition of aalap 2010.
  17. Aparna Bhattacharya of PGII got 2nd prize in Story Cartooning and 3rd prize in Poster Painting in Aalap 2010.
  18. Payel Ghosh, Arpita Ghosh and Moumita Dey of PGII won 3rd prize in Antakhsari in Aalap 2010.
  19. Aparna Bhattacharya of PGII stood 3rd in Long Jump, 2nd in Shot Put, 2nd in Relay Race in College Annual Sports held in December 2010.
  20. Debasree Ghosh of PGII won 1st prize in Needle race in College Annual Sports held in December 2010.
  21. Payel Ghosh of PGII got 3rd prize in Standing Skipping in College Annual Sports held in December 2010.

  1. Celebration of 50 Years of Botany Honours Teaching and Learning in the Century- old Department of Botany was started by First Maya Mitra Memorial Lecture-Phase I- by Dr. Tarak Mohan Das, Retd. Prof. C.U. on 19.01.11 Phase I- Exhibition and Reunion in August, 2011 Phase III- International Seminar in December, 2011.
  2. Kasturi Das, Hemlata, Shemashi Banerjee, Anamika Das, Piyali Das, Moumita Chanda, Moumita Dey, Debasree Ghosh,Ujani, Subhra Santra, Bedotroyee Sarkar, Pritha sarkar, Debatrita Biswas Payel Ghosh, Koyel Ghosh of PG II Presented Posters on Various aspects on their desertation Papers in a UGC sponsored national level seminar :- “Bioresource and Human Welfare” organized by Dept of Botany and Zoology on held in Lady Brabourne College in collaboration with BSI and ZSI, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India from 20.01.11to 21.01.11.
  3. All Honours and Postgraduate students went to a garden at Panihati, Sodepur for a local excursion on 14.01.11.
  4. IH stood 1st in the Exhibition on Posters and Model in Acharya Satyendranath Basu Smarak “Bigyan o Prajukti Mela-2011” on Medicinal Plants organized by Paschimbanga Bigyan Mancha North-East Zonal Committee from 09.02.11 to 13.02.11.
  5. Priyanka Boro, Trisha Mukherjee and Rupmanya Ghosh of IH attended the seminar on Microbiology held in the THK Jain College in February 2011.
  6. Atreyee Sengupta and Sucharita Das PGI participated in the National Workshop On Structural Bioinformatics and QSAR at Presidency University during 4th-6th March,2011.
  7. Rupmanya Ghosh and Diptasree Kumar IH donated blood in the Blood Donation Camp 2011 organized by College NSS.
  8. Students of IIH and PGII went for a long excursion to Santiniketan and adjoining areas from 27.01.11 to 30.01.11.
  9. All IIG Students went around the college campus for a local excursion on January 2011.
  10. Tania Mitra PGII-2010 is working as a research fellow and Munmun Jele and Jayita Saha are working as project fellow in a major research project - Conservation & documentation of wild biodiversity in Bethune College campus & surroundings –sponsored by West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Govt. of WB from 2009 from March 2011 and 2010 respectively.
