About The Department
The origin of the Under Graduate
department can be traced back to 1894. Many eminent
mathematicians like Professor Kaliprasanna Dasgupta,
Professor Shyamadas Mukherjee and Professor Prabodh
Chandra Gupta have served the department. The college was
affiliated to the Intermediate Arts course in
mathematics in 1915-1916 and for B.A. general course in
1921-1922. In 1923 the college became affiliated to the
intermediate science course as well. The department
received the affiliation in Honours course in 1923-24.
Since then the department has been producing many remarkable students who made their mark in their respective fields. Being a part of the Department has always been very encouraging and advantageous and it remains a landmark in the career of its students.
Smt. Sudhalata Sarkar (1932) made remarkable participation in the Non-cooperation movement in India's freedom struggle
Dr. Jyoti Das (1954) received Commonwealth scholarship, Scholarship from UK World Federation of Scientists for her research work. She remained the Sir Ashutosh Birth Centenary Professor (Formerly Hardinge Professor) till her retirement in 2002.
Dr. Aditi Lahiri (1971) received the Leibnitz Prize, highest honour awarded by the German Science Foundation
Dr. Neena Gupta received Birla Science Prize in Mathematics (2017), the INSA Young Scientist Award (2014), the Ramanujan Prize from the University of Madras (2014)
Dr. Aditi Sen De(1995) received the prestigious Shantiswarup Bhatnagar award and is the first woman physicist to receive the award in Indian history
The Post Graduate Department of
Mathematics at Bethune College, Kolkata started in 2007.
Eminent scholars like Professor M. K. Sen, Professor
Shobhakar Ganguly, Late Professor Jyoti Das and Late
Professor Somesh Bagchi extended their hands of
cooperation to the PG Department in its formative stage.
